OUR ITCHY FEET TOOK A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE… on DANGAR ISLAND

Have you heard of this place? Strangely enough, I only discovered this pocket rocket of a place just the other day and could not resist taking the family to check it out. It’s part of the Hornsby Shire aka the Bushland Shire, and is also known as the most northern part of Sydney. It is rich in natural beauty and holds a strong presence of our aboriginal culture and evidence they occupied this little Island. It’s a great find with many historical moments. This little Island is very isolated with access only by boat. A ferry ride from Brooklyn will get you there in about 15 minutes. The ferry service is fairly frequent and reasonable in price. $6.70 Adults and $3.40 children over 5/Seniors/Concession, this is each way. The walking track around Dangar Island is just 3.3km from the ferry wharf. Up the hills and down around bends, the views across the Hawkesbury river are second to none. Lots of quirky and artistic finds and the flora and fauna is abundant with a lot of native flowers in bloom. So what is there to see and do apart from stunning views and flora and fauna? There is a historic water tower, the remains of Henry Dangar’s 1890 home (not much remains though), a plaque which commemorates Captain Phillips landing back in 1788. Governor Phillip and his party camped for the night, catching fish (Mullet) and ended up naming the Island “Mullet Island” later it was changed to Dangar. Bradley’s beach was a lovely spot to stop and have our picnic lunch. It’s also the location you can see remains of shellfish which is evidence of Aboriginal occupation. Another spot which is rich in Aboriginal presence is the rock shelves and caves along with carvings found at Kiparra Park. There is even boom nets from WWII to prevent entry of Japanese Submarines. It’s hard to believe this tiny little Island on the outskirts of Sydney’s north would hold so much history. If you are after something to do with the family, consider a day trip to Dangar Island. There is a lovely café/convenience store at the wharf and also a bowling club open from Thursday to Sunday. (Best to check opening times). There is even a playground for the kids. Tomorrow is a trip to the Blue Mountains for more bush walking and adventures. So stay tuned…
