With the ABBA tune now ringing in our head, let’s explore where our Australian coins are made. The Royal Australian Mint is open 7 days a week from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and weekends from 10am to 4pm. This is a working Mint and the coin factory is on the ground floor with viewing windows located above. As you enter through the doors there is a large foyer with a café and a souvenir shop and a few displays to capture your interest. The staircase is impressive...Australian coins are under the clear coating up the entire staircase leading the way to the Museum and the viewing gallery. The factory, like most factories is only operational during the working week however, on weekends, you can still envisage how they work and to help with this, they have touch screen TVs which show you how they make coins from scratch and other interesting facts. The Museum itself is full of historical interest based on currency and a collection only seen at the Mint. When we finished, we headed downstairs to the café looking forward to a spot of lunch but unfortunately, it just did not seem appealing. The café menu is limited and saw a lot of plates left with food. It’s a negative and it could simply be an off day. A bit disappointing. However, the Royal Australian Mint is worth a visit and entry is free. We managed to cover it all in an hour. Why not join one of their free guided tours to find out more. Back to Abba … ‘if I had a little money’, I would ??? (me? travel the globe).
