PICNIC in COTTER AVENUE…

his idyllic setting is a perfect place for a picnic lunch and a relaxing afternoon.

We originally stumbled across this spot back when we first visited Canberra’s Deep Space complex roughly 6 years ago and I have been dreaming of returning ever since.

It is on the road out to Tidbinbilla roughly 23kms from the city centre. Winding down, you will discover the non-powered camp ground for tents to RV campers to the left and further along, just over the bridge and nestled by the river is Cotter Avenue. During autumn the leaves on the large populus alba trees start turning golden and fall like snowflakes from the cool breeze. We loved playing in the fallen leaves and making fun memories. There are plenty of picnic tables, BBQ facilities, a clean amenities block and ample shaded spots to pull out the picnic rug. The kids like mine will love the large playground with swings, see-saw, a large climbing frame and a basketball court. If that is not enough, we took our 2 for a walk along the discovery trail to see Cotter Dam.

Along the trail, there is the story of how Canberra receives its water and the importance of Cotter Reserve in its planning. At the end of the short trail, you will be amazed to find the 16 metre wide viewing platform overlooking the dam itself. Hard to believe the water level is to the very top on the rim especially when you are standing well below. This place has provided us with many more fond memories and again has left us with a yearning to return. Perhaps next time, we may try the camp grounds.
